Avant-garde beauty editorial for Mirror Mirror Magazine
As a Belgian fashion and beauty photographer based in Ghent, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Jacquess from No Babes Agency and ever-so talented makeup artist Vlad Thiriaux on an experimental beauty editorial that was recently published in Mirror Mirror Magazine. This avant-garde shoot explored the intersection of handmade costume elements, bold 80s-inspired makeup, and light painting techniques in a studio setting. We wanted to push the boundaries of fashion photography by blending conceptual styling with esoteric symbolism—echoing my own background in surrealist research and visual storytelling.
One of the core techniques we used was light painting, a method in artistic photography that involves long exposure, darkness, and the intuitive movement of a flashlight to sculpt light. It’s a process of creative discovery—one that aligns well with our goal of making each portrait feel like a ritualistic unveiling. There’s a sense of alchemy when a photographer, model, and makeup artist come together to create something unpredictable yet emotionally resonant.
The final images—featuring bold makeup, surreal effects, and conceptual styling—aligned perfectly with the eclectic aesthetic of Mirror Mirror Magazine, a publication known for championing avant-garde fashion photography. We’re thrilled that this Belgian-based editorial shoot was featured, and look forward to continuing to explore the poetic edge between beauty, myth, and light in future projects.
